From observer to leader: curbing the impact of racial bias in UX
Faulty facial recognition, equating black people with gorillas on Google, confusion between shadows and dark skin by smart cars to the point of being hit... Racism in the user experience can sometimes manifest itself in spectacular ways.
However, it is not only in these examples that racist prejudice exists: it invades what we all produce in an insidious way.
From design to implementation and even in the use of products: without backing down, we can harm and create exclusion for certain groups by perpetuating or even amplifying inequalities.
It is also within the companies, and therefore among the employees of the sector, that we find misunderstandings that oppose and discriminate against the most marginalized population.
So how do you ensure neutral or universal experiences in a world where UX is meant to be optimal and inclusive for all?
I want to share with you a multi-faceted approach to solving systemic problems in user experience, from semantics to personae, through personal stories and through History with a capital H.
